What is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy focuses on correcting improper function and muscle use in the orofacial area. This therapy addresses issues related to breathing, posture, chewing, swallowing, and speech, creating a healthy balance between orofacial structure and function.

Myofunctional therapy is sometimes performed in combination with a frenectomy. This is a simple procedure to correct tongue and lip ties (or TOTs). During a frenectomy, the frenum (the thick connective tissue) is severed to free up more movement. It’s a quick low-risk, outpatient procedure that we perform with our LightScalpel laser.

What is Tongue Tie?

A tongue tie (ankyloglossia) is when a band of tissue “ties” a baby’s

tongue to the floor of their mouth, it can make it hard for babies to

breastfeed.

• Instead of sucking, babies with tongue tie may bite the nipple,

causing pain for the mother.

• Babies with a tongue tie may not get enough milk and can

experience growth issues.

• Symptoms of tongue ties can include painful breastfeeding,

difficulty latching, and mastitis in the mother.

• The lip can also be tethered, creating unnecessary restriction.

When the upper lip is “tied” upward, and the tongue is weighted

downwards, an open lip posture can easily occur.

• When the open mouth posture turns into a habit, mouth breathing

and other negative implications can occur.

• Severe tongue & lip ties can create a gap to form in the front center

teeth, and can contribute to cavities, as brushing properly can be

extra challenging.

• Tongue and lip ties can cause speech and articulation issues

because a child’s tongue must touch the roof of their mouth to

make certain sounds.
